Adoption Requirements

Since we began taking in abandoned guinea pigs, we have learned that certain conditions
are important for our animals to find permanent homes. It has become clear that
it is easy to find people to take a guinea pig or two, but it is very difficult to find people who
will keep them, and value them, for more than a year or so.
Although we have tried to keep our requirements to a minimum, we have found the
following requirements essential for our animals becoming valued family pets.

1- No cages in children's bedrooms.
There are several good reasons for this. Here are two of them...
(A)Your guinea pigs should be part of the family, if they are isolated in a bedroom, this is not going to happen.
(B)A child should NOT be expected to monitor the needs of living creatures without supervision,
that is an adult responsibility.
For more reasons why this is not a good idea go to... www.cavyspirit.com/nocagesinbedroom.htm

2- Cages should be placed in a room with frequent family traffic, such as a family room or kitchen.
NO cages in the basement, unless this room used daily by the family, and NO guinea pigs in garages.

3- We do not allow the breeding of our guinea pigs.

4- We do not adopt our guinea pigs out to children, but we DO adopt them out to families.
Parents must want to have the guinea pigs too, as they ultimately will be the primary caregivers.

5- We adopt our guinea pigs out in non-breeding pairs or trios, or to families that already have a guinea pig.
These are highly social animals that will be happier, and far more interesting pets, when living with a companion animal.
Two guinea pigs are really no more work than looking after one, and the payoff is huge .

6- Standard pet shop "guinea pig starter kit" cages or "Critter Pens", are way too small!
We recommend nothing smaller that 2' x 3' feet, but the bigger the better!

7- Your should be prepared to supply care by a specialized veterinarian should your animal require it during it's lifespan.

Are You Sure You Want a Guinea Pig ?
Family Quiz

1- As a family, are you prepared to care for, clean up after, and buy supplies for your Guinea pigs for the next 6 years ?
2- Are you prepared to place your guinea pig's cage in a room that is frequented by family life, such as a family room, or kitchen?
3- Are you prepared to spend time interacting with your animals every day, especially if in the future, you own a single guinea pig?
4- Are you prepared to supervise young children whenever they have their guinea pigs out of thier cage?
5- As a parent, it is possible, even likely, that now or in the future, you may become the primary caretaker of these animals. Are you willing take on that responsibility?
6- Are you prepared to take your guinea pigs to a specialized vet should they require medical attention?

If you answered "NO" to any of these questions you should probably reconsider getting guinea pigs. These are the simple realities of owning small animals, and there is simply no way around them. If you answered "YES" to all of these questions, YOU just might be the new guinea pig owner we are looking for !!
